Agriculture making headlines

Smart Houseplants

In junior high, Andrew Dixon and his brother, Philip, began selling corn stalk bundles to crafting enthusiasts to earn spending money. In 2005, a neighboring agritourism farmer retired and encouraged the young men to take up the torch. The next fall, the Dixons, along with their parents, Steve and Karen, opened Grandaddy’s Farm in Estill Springs to the public, adding a tourism element to the mainstay crops of corn, wheat and soybeans on the property cultivated by the younger Dixons’ great-grandfather, Charles, in 1951. Gardening Tips

The silhouettes created for the 2018 summer “Joyful Flight: A Hummingbird Exhibit,” on display at the UT Gardens, Knoxville, will be auctioned on Sunday, September 9. The auction is the last phase of an art project designed to promote community participation and artist collaboration as well awareness and support for the UT Gardens.

Pick TN Winners

In Tennessee, a growing number of farmers markets are putting more dollars into farmers’ pockets while helping hungry people maximize their access to fresh food. Forty of Tennessee’s farmers markets now work with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the federal government’s primary anti-hunger program.
